Highlights for class this week:
Reading/ELA: We will continue our new chapter book clubs this week in class. In addition, we will be reviewing prefixes and suffixes. Writing: We will continue our narrative unit on fairy tale adaptations. We will also be writing an Earth Day inspired narrative this week. Math: We will be taking some time to go back and review fractions. Students will take the Math Inventory on Monday. Social Studies: We will begin our new unit on Colonial America this week. Science: Heat test will be Friday. Study guide is in homework packet. If your child has a summer birthday and you would like to send in treats, please email me. GA Milestones is this week on Wednesday, and Thursday. Thanks to everyone who has donated testing snacks. Please make an effort to have students report to class on time those days.
Highlights for class this week: Reading/ELA: We will finish our novel study this week using the book One Well. We have been using the book to focus on main idea and using context clues to figure out the meaning of words. There is no spelling of Wordly Wise this week. Writing: We will start a new narrative unit on fairy tale adaptations. This week we will be looking at different fairy tales and seeing how authors change the classic stories. Math: We will be reviewing everything we have learned in math this week. Some areas of weakness that have been observed include: area, perimeter, and the properties of multiplication (associative, commutative, and distributive). Social Studies: Study for economic test that will be Friday. Study guide is in the homework packet Science: We will begin our new unit on heat. We will get to use our new knowledge to build solar ovens on Friday during outdoor learning day! GA Milestones is this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Thanks to everyone who has donated testing snacks. Please make an effort to have students report to class on time that day.
Highlights for class this week: Reading/ELA: We will continue our novel study this week using the book One Well. We have been using the book to focus on main idea and using context clues to figure out the meaning of words. There is no spelling of Wordly Wise this week. Writing: Last week students created an informational writing. This week, we will begin a new narrative writing to include dialogue. This writing will be an introduction to our larger narrative writing that we will begin after the Milestones testing. Math: We will be reviewing everything we have learned in math this week. Some areas of weakness that have been observed include: area, perimeter, and the properties of multiplication (associative, commutative, and distributive). Social Studies: Last week we began our class economic unit. We discussed many economics vocabulary and learned what a budget is. We will continue to learn about spending and saving our money. Please see the orange sheet that came home last Friday. The Davis Dash is this Wednesday! We will be having all of our incentives that we have aearned from the dash on this day as well - extra recess, pj day, movie and popcorn, and games.
Report Cards will be going home Friday. Highlights for class this week: Reading/ELA: We will begin a new novel study this week using the book One Well. We will discuss the importance of water through this book. This will be a great tie-in for our pollution unit in science. This week we will be having a spelling week - test will be Friday. We will work a little bit more on compare and contrast this week. We will practice typing our responses on the computer in preparation for the GA Milestones. Writing: We will begin working on paragraphs of the week for the next two weeks. These will be little stories to help us reinforce all the different skills we have learned throughout the year. After spring break we will tackle another long story. Math: We will be focusing on time this week. We will need to tell time to the nearest minute and learn how to figure out elapsed time. Science: We will begin talking about recycling and pollution. Remember, we have a field trip to the Wright Environmental Center next Tuesday. Read Across America will continue this week. Students can send in coupons for every 40 minutes they read. If they turn them into the library they will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
Tuesday, March 5th – dress up as your favorite character Friday, March 8th - wear your favorite pjs Highlights for class this week: Reading/ELA: We finished reading Peter Pan last week. We will continue to work with the book to increase our knowledge of verbs, quotations, and increasing our writing skills. We are on a spelling week, please study the words that were sent home Friday throughout the week. We will continue our unit on subordinating and coordinating conjunctions - expect there to be some on this weeks spelling test. We will dive into learning about point of view and comma rules. Writing: Students will begin a brand new Peter Pan narrative writing. We will review all the narrative writing skills we looked at in the beginning of the year. Students will also learn how to expand their opinion writings. Math: Last we we spent some time learning about line plots. This week we will continue our topic of measuring to the half and quarter inch. If you can help students measure items at home, that will help them in school in the next few weeks of math. Social Studies: We will continue our unit on European explorers. There will be a test next Thursday over all the explorers. A study guide will come home with next weeks homework packet. I hope everyone had a great Winter Break! This coming week we have a lot going on. Tune out TV week is this week. Please see the email sent out for more information. Read Across America is this week. There will be theme days this week and next week. Also, students can send in coupons for every 20 minutes they read. If they turn them into the library they will be entered into a drawing for prizes.

We will be using the book to help us increase our knowledge of verbs and review quotation marks/dialogue. This week we will be studying Wordly Wise week 7 - test Friday. We will continue our unit on subordinating and coordinating conjunctions. We will review coordinating conjunctions and begin learning about subordinating conjunctions. We will also being learning about point of view this week. Writing: Students will continue to work on and refine their Peter Pan scenes. Students will finish their independent choice opinion writings. Math: We will finish our unit on fractions this week. We will introduce the new topic of measuring to the half and quarter inch towards the end of the week. Typically, this is a very difficult standard for students. If you can help them measure items at home, that will help them in school in the next few weeks of math. Social Studies: We will continue our unit on European explorers. We will have a guest speaker come in on Monday to discuss explorer and native american relationships. They will also discuss Christopher Columbus. Highlights for class this week:

This week we will studying Wordly Wise week 6 - test Friday. We will begin a new unit on subordinating and coordinating conjunctions this week. Writing: Students will continue to work on their Peter Pan scenes. They will peer edit and practice adding dialogue into their writing. Students will begin independent choice opinion writing. Math: We will focus on two step word problems this week. In addition, we will spend more time focusing on equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. We will review missing numbers in multiplication and division problems as well. Science: Students will present their diorama projects this week. Social Studies: We will continue our unit on European explorers. We will focus on Henry Hudson and John Cabot this week. Highlights for class this week:
Reading/ELA: We will continue our novel study of Peter Pan to help us understand figurative language. We will continue to be focusing on comparing and contrasting texts. There will be no spelling or Wordly Wise this week. Instead, we will have a social studies explorers vocabulary test on Friday. Please study the words sent home in the homework packet. Writing: Students will continue working on their partner opinion writing (which is better: cats or dogs). Additionally, students will begin writing scenes from Peter Pan. Math: We will continue working with fractions this week in math. We are continuing to understand fractions on a number line and will begin to look at equivalent fractions. We will continue practicing written responses to math word problems. Science: Please see the Science Diorama project sheet that came home. Projects will be due February 11th. We will be starting a new STEM project - focusing on animal adaptations. Social Studies: We will continue our unit on European explorers.
