I hope everyone had a great Winter Break! This coming week we have a lot going on. Tune out TV week is this week. Please see the email sent out for more information. Read Across America is this week. There will be theme days this week and next week. Also, students can send in coupons for every 20 minutes they read. If they turn them into the library they will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
Tuesday, February 26th - Whoville crazy hair day Tuesday, March 5th – dress up as your favorite character Friday, March 8th - wear your favorite pjs Highlights for class this week: Reading/ELA: We will continue our novel study of Peter Pan. We will be using the book to help us increase our knowledge of verbs and review quotation marks/dialogue. This week we will be studying Wordly Wise week 7 - test Friday. We will continue our unit on subordinating and coordinating conjunctions. We will review coordinating conjunctions and begin learning about subordinating conjunctions. We will also being learning about point of view this week. Writing: Students will continue to work on and refine their Peter Pan scenes. Students will finish their independent choice opinion writings. Math: We will finish our unit on fractions this week. We will introduce the new topic of measuring to the half and quarter inch towards the end of the week. Typically, this is a very difficult standard for students. If you can help them measure items at home, that will help them in school in the next few weeks of math. Social Studies: We will continue our unit on European explorers. We will have a guest speaker come in on Monday to discuss explorer and native american relationships. They will also discuss Christopher Columbus.

Highlights for class this week:
Reading/ELA: We will continue our novel study of Peter Pan. We will be using the book to help us read like a writer! We will continue investigating figurative language. This week we will studying Wordly Wise week 6 - test Friday. We will begin a new unit on subordinating and coordinating conjunctions this week. Writing: Students will continue to work on their Peter Pan scenes. They will peer edit and practice adding dialogue into their writing. Students will begin independent choice opinion writing. Math: We will focus on two step word problems this week. In addition, we will spend more time focusing on equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. We will review missing numbers in multiplication and division problems as well. Science: Students will present their diorama projects this week. Social Studies: We will continue our unit on European explorers. We will focus on Henry Hudson and John Cabot this week. Highlights for class this week:
Reading/ELA: We will continue our novel study of Peter Pan to help us understand figurative language. We will continue to be focusing on comparing and contrasting texts. There will be no spelling or Wordly Wise this week. Instead, we will have a social studies explorers vocabulary test on Friday. Please study the words sent home in the homework packet. Writing: Students will continue working on their partner opinion writing (which is better: cats or dogs). Additionally, students will begin writing scenes from Peter Pan. Math: We will continue working with fractions this week in math. We are continuing to understand fractions on a number line and will begin to look at equivalent fractions. We will continue practicing written responses to math word problems. Science: Please see the Science Diorama project sheet that came home. Projects will be due February 11th. We will be starting a new STEM project - focusing on animal adaptations. Social Studies: We will continue our unit on European explorers. We will focus on Christopher Columbus this week.Explorers vocabulary test will be this Friday. Please see the file below regarding Make kindness Cool Weeks. 3rd grade is collecting rulers. Thanks!
